The first Steak 'n Shake opened its doors in 1934 in Normal, Ill., after chain founder Gus Belt decided to convert a gas station/chicken restaurant into a hamburger stand. From those modest beginnings, Steak 'n Shake has become one of the oldest chain restaurants in America and is now celebrating its 75th anniversary.
Despite many changes over the years, the restaurant's signature items remain the steakburgers, made with cuts of black Angus beef and milkshakes made with hand-dipped ice cream. The burgers come in varieties ranging from patty melts served on sourdough or rye bread to the grilled Portobello 'n' Swiss steakburger. The steakburgers range in price from $3.99 to $5.99. All are made to order, and customers can choose their toppings. Recently, the restaurant added mini-burgers called shooters to the menu for 89 cents to 99 cents.
The restaurant's classic shakes come in five flavors: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana and mocha. Customers who can't decide can try two flavors served in a side-to-side manner. There also are an assortment of bits and pieces milkshakes with candy, cookies or cookie dough in them as well as the deluxe sippable sundae. A shake costs between $2.99 and $3.99.
Another favorite at the chain is the chili, a recipe first created by the founder's wife at the original Steak 'n Shake location. It's a basic Midwest chili with beef and beans. Customers can get a bowl of chili for $2.99. It's also available served over spaghetti as a 3-way ($3.79) or 5-way ($4.79).
