Caves and caverns aren’t uncommon throughout southern Indiana, but the Squire Boone Caverns are unlike any other.
Everyday, one million gallons of water flush through this large underground cave system. It’s taken centuries for the gorgeous limestone and calcite formations to fully come together as they’re seen today.
This beautiful underground world was discovered in 1790 by Daniel and Squire Boone while on a hunting trip and hid in the caverns to escape a band of Indians. An experienced tour guide takes visitors through tunnels carved over millions of years and decorated with geologic formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone. These masterpieces of nature are deep underground, but readily accessible by lighted walkways. As you wander by the underground streams, plunging waterfalls, and columns...it makes you wonder what the Boone Brothers thought as they entered total darkness of the caverns and saw these wonderful formations.
After exploring the Squire Boone Caverns, many visitors stroll the village and visit the crafts people while they are dipping candles and making lye soap. Watch as the miller grinds corn at Boone's Mill and sifts out cornmeal and grits. Relax in the bakery with a fresh baked sugar cookie and a sarsaparilla or visit the candy cabin for a fresh piece of fudge or mine for gems and fools’ gold at the gem mining sluice.
